Owen describes the gas attacks on the World War 1 battlefield and how the sol crushrs travelled through th remains when they were half-asleep. He describes one of the young men who did not deliver the goods to put his gas mask on when the five-nines d ropped. The alliteration and simile, Knock-kneed, turn back like hags, we cursed through the sludge is telling us they are having difficulty going through the mud. Owen uses graphic descriptive language of the effects of the gas making the victim die slowly, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

From this poem, Owen is saying to us war is direful because you have to watch your friends or allies die when you cant genius them. Behind the wagon we flung him in, Owen showing the idea that the soldiers drop off their humanity because once they were killed they were treated like trash.
